NordicBet was sold to Betsson in a spectacular and unexpected deal in April 2012. NordicBet was a successful private company and nothing indicated that the company was up for sale for up to €85,000,000

The reason for this merger was not poker related. Surely NordiBet had a very strong brand in the Nordic poker community but Betsson's reasoning for buying out this private company was securing major assets and gaining market shares in the Scandinavian region.

It was not long before this deal took place that Betsson had bought Betsafe yet another major Scandinavian gaming operator. This list of Scandinavian bookmakers has decreased significantly the past years since the biggest operators has bought out their closest competitors to secure growth and a larger market share.

Betsson acquired the private company from a long list of individuals including founders, members of management, employees and external investors, Betsson announced in a press release. An additional €20 million would be paid out depending on the performance of NordicBet 6 months after the deal was signed.

The deal had no affect for the customers or for the online poker world. NordicBet remained on the Microgaming network while Betsson stayed with Ongame. The take over seemed successful and Betsson is making it very hard for its competitors in Scandinavia and the Baltic region.
